A Look at the EASA Safety Review 2024
Knowledge / August 28, 2024
Key Findings of the EASA Safety Review 2024
- Reduced Fatal Accidents: The year 2023 saw a record low of two fatal accidents involving commercially operated passenger aircraft globally. This marks a significant improvement from previous years and demonstrates the industry’s commitment to safety.
- Resurgent Air Travel: European aviation has experienced a strong recovery, with passenger traffic reaching 95% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023. This resurgence underscores the resilience of the industry and the enduring demand for air travel.
- Safety Improvements: EASA Member State operators have contributed to this global safety trend, with a marked decrease in fatal accidents and fatalities.
- Challenges and Risks: While the overall outlook is positive, the industry continues to face challenges such as unlawful acts, complex human-machine interfaces, and the risks associated with cargo operations.
The industry’s commitment to effective safety management systems, the design of safe and intuitive human-machine interfaces, and ongoing efforts to address these challenges are essential to maintain the positive momentum towards a safer future.
“In 2023, there were 7.3 Million safe flights in Europe with no fatal accidents involving a European operator both for complex and non-complex aeroplanes.”
EASA Highlights of the Annual Safety Review 2024
Changes to the Annual Review
Data Source: all domain-specific appendices in the report are now based on data from the European Central Repository (ECR). This data repository centralizes safety-related information from across the EU, providing a more holistic view of safety risks. iQSMS users within the EU also contribute to the ECR via the built-in ECCAIRS 2 support in the iQSMS Reporting Module.
Focus on UAS Safety: Recognizing the increasing importance of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), also known as drones, the report includes a dedicated chapter on drone safety. This new chapter will provide valuable insights into the safety challenges and opportunities associated with UAS operations.
The importance of an SMS
At ASQS, we understand the challenges of implementing and maintaining a strong SMS program. iQSMS is specifically designed to streamline and simplify these processes. It supports aviation organizations of all sizes comply with regulations, manage safety data efficiently, and to continuously improve their safety performance. Find out more about the iQSMS core modules here.
